Bronchitis Bronchitis (persistent coughing) is an inflammation of the tubes (bronchi) leading from the windpipe down to the lungs. Pneumonia refers to an infection or irritation of the lungs. Kennel cough is usually an infection of the windpipe and bronchi. In healthy dogs these problems usually follow a viral infection or irritant such as pollution, cigarette smoke or noxious fumes. Stress, fatigue and low immunity can also be underlying contributing factors. Your vet may prescribe decongestants, antibiotics and mucous loosening medications.

Nasal Discharges Nasal discharges can be related to foreign bodies, dental problems, allergies, tumors and viruses. It is important that a diagnosis is made so that any underlying disorders are uncovered. Sinusitis can be due to viral or bacterial infections, often triggered by allergies. Poor circulation and lack of exercise can also be contributing factors. Nasal secretions clear more easily when your pet is well hydrated. Encourage plenty fluids (broths and moist foods). Take your pet into the bathroom while you shower and allow the room to fill with steam. You don’t need to put your pet under the water for the steam to help loosen the congestion in the nasal passages. Do this for at least fifteen minutes a day for acute conditions, and ten minutes a day for chronic conditions. Use an oil vaporiser and oils of eucalyptus, thyme, pine and lavender (all or any) so that your pet can inhale the essential oils. These oils help clear congestion and have antimicrobial properties.

Pneumonia A wide range of infections or chemical irritants can precipitate pneumonia. Antibiotics may be absolutely life saving when the infection is bacterial, but viral infections are a lot harder to treat conventionally. Pneumonia may be a result of lowered immunity, a preceding bacterial or viral infection, sensitivities to chemical irritants or pollution, allergies, stress and fatigue, especially if exercised in very cold weather.
