Reproduction

False or pseudo pregnancy False or pseudo pregnancy is not uncommon in entire females. It looks like the real thing, except there are no offspring. It usually occurs some two to three months after the last heat and is considered a normal phenomenon, so treatment is not usually necessary. The false pregnancy will usually resolve in two to three weeks by itself, but if it is considered a problem and recurs repeatedly then speying is often recommended. Alternatively various drugs can be used to halt the false pregnancy. The major problems associated with false pregnancy are the enlargement of the mammary (breast) tissue and self-suckling. Some complementary therapies can be considered

Infertility - Female Infertility and reproductive problems are not uncommon these days. Diet, stress, infections, toxicity from drugs and environmental pollution, build-up from pesticides and herbicides and other factors can influence reproduction.

Infertility - Male Infertility is not necessarily the same thing as sterility. There is a whole range of factors that can lead to infertility including hormone abnormalities, poor mating management, trauma, environmental damage, stress, heat stress, prostate disease and others. Provided the underlying causes can be found and dealt with, increased fertility may take some two to three months to return. Reduced stress and good quality nutrition will assist.

Mastitis Bacterial infection of the mammary glands is potentially life threatening and can lead to septic shock. It can be caused by trauma inflicted by the babies’ teeth or nails, poor hygiene or an infection from somewhere else in the body. The offspring will need to be hand raised or placed on a surrogate. Breeders’ clubs will be able to put you into quick contact with a suitable mum if you are prepared to do some phoning around. Meanwhile your pet will need to be treated. Usually antibiotics are necessary and can be life saving.

Pregnancy Most pets require little assistance during their pregnancy. However, there are situations where some complementary therapies may be considered. AVOID Many herbs have the potential to induce abortion in pregnant bitches, only use herbs under the guidance of a veterinary herbalist. Avoid aloe vera, barberry, buchu, cascara, golden seal, juniper, lovage, mistletoe, wormwood, pennyroyal, rue, yarrow, senna, wild ginger.

Prostate Prostate problems affect many males particularly those that are not desexed. Middle-aged to older entire dogpets are likely to have some degree of prostate enlargement. Castration actually reduces the risk of this enlargement and also reduces the risk of infection and cancer of the prostate gland. Castration is a common form of therapy to resolve enlarged prostate glands although hormones may also be used. Antibiotics are necessary if there is an infection because there is a danger that the infection may become an abscess.

Pyometra or Infection When pets are on heat, they are naturally meant to get pregnant. Repeated cycles of being on heat without pregnancy and repeated use of hormones in previous cycles can lead to changes in the lining of the uterus predisposing it to infection. Pyometra refers to the uterus being infected, and this can be a life threatening condition leading to septic shock. Desexing is considered the treatment of choice; however, conventional medicines may be used if you really want to breed later. Just remember that if there are already changes in the lining of the uterus, the chances of her getting pregnant are significantly reduced anyway. Antibiotics are usually life saving in this condition.
