Aromatherapy
|
Aromatherapy is the use of pure, essential oils to create a sense of well-being, balance and health. Although these essential oils are widely used in people, the knowledge of the use, toxicity and effectiveness in dogs is more limited.
Essential oils are derived from plants and each essential oil has a number of chemical components that contribute to its healing properties.
Essential oils are readily absorbed through the skin, and through inhalation. They contain plant hormones and chemicals that act like chemical messengers in our bodies. These chemical messengers can influence the immune, endocrine, reproductive, digestive and respiratory systems. Some essential oils can have antibacterial effects, as well as antiviral, immune-stimulating, and mood modifying effects.

Flower Essences
|
The Bach Flower Remedies are based on the research and findings of an English doctor, Dr Edward Bach. Dr Bach was a medical pioneer in the early 1900s, who became aware of the link between stress, emotions and illness. He was also a specialist in the study of bacteria, and in particular the role of bacteria and chronic disease. Dr Bach sought to find a simple, safe way to restore harmony in the diseased body through emotional wellness. In his search, he discovered properties of flowers, trees and bushes that provided him with the remedies he was looking for.
Since his discovery many more flower essences have been discovered around the world, including FES (in California) and Australian Bush Flower Essences. Other essences have also been developed from gems, shells and other materials. Flower essences, while derived from plants, are not herbal remedies because they do not contain enough plant material. They are prepared by infusing the flowers in spring water and then the liquid is filtered and a small amount of brandy is added as a preservative.

Homeopathy
|
Even though homeopathy is a medical system in its own right, it is based on several principles that are true for holistic medicine in general. It is based on the understanding that the body has the ability to heal itself, to regenerate cells and restore health. The body also has inherent weaknesses, genetic deficiencies, and constitutional characteristics and is vulnerable to factors such as inappropriate nutrition, the environment, medications, stress and ageing.
While the body constantly tries to maintain a state of balance, it may do so by expressing symptoms. Symptoms are a signal that the body is not at ease. It is trying to adapt to those factors that affect its vital force. Symptoms are also important defence mechanisms. For example diarrhoea is an attempt by the body to eliminate infectious, offending, toxic or parasitic agents. If we simply aim to remove the symptom but not the underlying imbalance, we may in fact drive the problem deeper because we are not addressing the true cause of the symptom. Homeopathy attempts to alter and strengthen the vital force so that the body’s ability to fight the disease is stimulated and enhanced.

Pet Herbs
|
Herbal treatments are gentle and effective.
While some herbs can work very quickly, for chronic disease it may take several weeks before improvements are noticeable. This is because herbs work to improve the body’s natural functioning (such as waste elimination), rather than suppressing symptoms in the way that conventional medicines often do.
Also herbs need to be used along with attention to the underlying causes of the problem. There is no point using herbs, for example, if the diet is poor to start with, or the pet is infested with fleas.

Supplements
|
Healthy pets on good quality diets should not, in theory, require any supplements. However, commercial foods and fresh foods can also lose significant nutritional value through cooking and storage. And there can be differences in how well pets digest their food, how well they utilise the various nutrients it contains, and what their individual requirements are. Pets that are in poor health or that have additional requirements such as old pets, working pets, very active pets or growing pets may benefit from the addition of various supplements in their diet. Pets that are highly stressed, chronically unwell or that are dealing with toxin overload may have higher requirements especially for vitamins and minerals involved in detoxification pathways in the body.
A word of warning: Supplements and other natural products need to be used appropriately. It is a false assumption that just because it’s natural, it is safe. Many supplements on sale on the internet could be useless or at worse become potentially toxic if used carelessly.
